MEET YOUR PATENT ATTORNEY

We need someone who gets it.
The code. And the company.

Patent work for a software startup needs technical understanding, practical judgment, and a clear connection to the business you are building.

THE PROBLEM

You do not want to explain
the startup context from scratch.

You need an attorney who can discuss your technology and understand why runway, product direction, partnerships, and future transactions belong in the same conversation.

THE QUESTIONS BEHIND IT

Does the attorney have experience with software technology?

Can we talk about business priorities as well as filing steps?

Who is actually responsible for the work?

HOW IAF HELPS

Meet Jurgen Vollrath.
Engineer. Attorney. Founder.

Jurgen brings more than three decades of patent practice and IP leadership. His career combines engineering, enterprise software patent work, licensing, due diligence, and company formation. He leads IAF’s patent work and makes the legal and strategic decisions.

01

Software experience at SAP.

Jurgen served as acting Chief IP Officer and Chief Patent Counsel for SAP Research, led a worldwide IP team, and negotiated SAP’s global patent cross-license with Microsoft.

02

Commercial experience beyond drafting.

At National Semiconductor, his work included licensing and IP due diligence. He also led a law firm’s San Francisco patent practice.

03

Experience building companies.

He co-founded Corinthian Ophthalmic, is a named inventor, and is co-inventor and co-founder of ClaimMark.

MAKE THE NEXT STEP PRACTICAL

Bring an invention.
Bring the company behind it.

Explain the technical difference

What works differently in the product and why that matters.

Explain the business direction

What the company is building toward and where a patent might fit.

Agree on the work

Define the service, scope, and fees before the professional engagement begins.

Selected career experience provides context for Jurgen’s approach. It is not a promise of a particular result in a new startup’s matter. IAF’s published services are paid professional work.

WHAT FOUNDERS ASK

A little more clarity.

Will Jurgen review the application himself?

IAF’s published process states that Jurgen reviews, rewrites, and decides. Claim strategy is a legal judgment made by the attorney, and you review the complete draft before filing.

Where can we read more about his background?

The IAF biography describes his SAP, National Semiconductor, Corinthian, law firm, and ClaimMark experience and links to published professional and patent records.
